Going mostly with my gut feeling on this, but there are reasons that Underworld is favored. Once Upon a Time in Mexico is the sequel to Desperado, which does have it's fans, but only managed a total gross of 25 million. Add to that new fans from rentals, the addition of Johny Depp and Salma Hayek to the cast, and it will no doubt smash Desperado's box office. From what I've heard people are looking forward to this one, but I can't figure it out, sure it looks pretty good in the preview, but I thought Desperado was pretty weak. But the buzz seems very positive so far.
So does Underworld's. This movie looks kick-ass. Its got vampires, werewolves, and wanna-be matrix fighting effects and style done right, opposed to the other cheesy imitators. I exptect this movie to do very well. The preview looks fantastic. It does seem to be missing something, though... the script might not be as strong as it could be, but the special effects, make-up, directing, all look top-notch in the trailer. -3 sounds good, I guess, it could be close, but, I feel that Underworld will edge it out if not clobber it in the box office. OUTIM is competing with Matchstick Men, which might do O.K. as it's got some star power behind it but doesn't look all that great. Cabin Fever, some slasher I haven't heard of, is also being released that week. Underworld is coming out the following weekend, September 19, and will be going up against Mexico's second weekend, a Michael Cain/robert Duvall film called Secondhand Lions, which won't steal anyone from the Underworld target audience, and The Fighting Tempations with Beyonce Knowles and Cuba Gooding Junior. This is a good match-up, both are rated R and both look to be a couple of the more popular action flicks nearing the end of the year. Generally speaking, Blade 2 seems like a decent comparison to Underworld, and I don't think Antonio Banderas can compete.
